When I googled what is a hobby?  This is what I found:

“an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure”.

When I say hobby, I say “ a hobby is an act of more than pleasure.

When I give the answer to: what is a hobby?  I would say it is an act of creativity, an act where we can grow our creativity.  A hobby is an act that permeates through our life in our conversations, it grows our interests and our self esteem.

The simple act of having a hobby that you love leads to self -empowerment.

Many people may call a sport a hobby. You can watch my video to hear what I say about sport and creativity and empowering passion.

My hobbies have been many over the years. I have always had craft type projects that I have engaged myself in.  Wood work, Macrame, crocheting, mosaics, pottery, photography, gardening, geneology.  I would also call my interest in phycology a hobby until I felt it was my calling.  I would also call my interest in food and cooking and good eating as a hobby until I made it a way of life.

I didn’t realise it was important to have hobbies until my uncle showed me how important it is to keep our minds and bodies moving in our later years of life.  Uncle Stan was in his 90’s and was still interesting to speak with because he was interesting.  He was interesting because he had on interest that sparked his heart.  His trains!

His passion for trains gave him the drive to learn, to experiment, to research, to search out other like minds and to travel the world.  This passion gave him life, it gave his life purpose in his later years, it gave him the ability to think out of the box.  He was always interested in what we were all doing because his mind was open and willing to see possibilities.

We are often filling our time with work, taking care of parents, siblings, children through out our lives. To pursue our own interests can seem selfish and time consuming when we were told to work hard, do a good job, be good citizens, take care of your family.  The more I see people grow older and the more I speak with them as I’m getting older I hear people say that they wish they had of pursued a hobby to give them an interest to keep their minds stimulated to discover themselves to spend time with themselves.  I have even heard older people in their nineties say that their hobby became their legacy.

How to Learn what you are Passionate about through a Hobby.

  • Take time for yourself to experiment with one hobby.
  • If that hobby doesn’t feel right try another ONE Hobby.
  • Give your experimentation time at least 6 months for each hobby.  Sometimes we find aspects of a hobby that we get to love, love isn’t always at first glance.
  • While you are experimenting, ask yourself do you enjoy to have a hobby where you can do it with others or do you prefer to do it by yourself or do you want the choice.
  • Check that it is an act that you are using your hands and can create your own style.
  • Check that it is an act that you can learn further skills of the craft.
  • Observe yourself while you are engaging in the hobby do you feel excited time and time and time and time again.  Do you find yourself wanting to research or further experiment with your hobby.
  • Observe in yourself what it feels like to achieve a milestone in a simple activity that you set out to do.  For example I love to take bird photographs.  I’m really excited with a buzz through my body when I capture the texture, the eye, the perfect composition.
  • Observe yourself being totally present whilst engaging in your hobby, this skill alone can be taken into your conversations with your family, your children for top notch quality time.  I’m sure you are aware when you are speaking with someone and their head is off somewhere else because they cannot hold focus and really listen.

These are just a few tips as to how to discover your passion through the simple act of developing a hobby

  1. I like what you say about observing yourself while you do the hobby. It’s not just about the doing, it’s also about the being and how the activity makes us feel. Being mindful of experiences we are having is a great to learn which ones we want to continue doing and which ones don’t serve us as much.
