18 Business Ideas for Women in 2018

As they all say …New Year – New You! With so many developments and technological digital advancements taking place in the past few years around the world, the year 2018 is promising to be a productive year for the woman willing to be focussed and who are willing to pursue their dreams and passions and turn them into a real flourishing independent entity. Being a successful women entrepreneur and running 8 successful businesses, I have been mentoring people especially women for over 30 years now. As I have been travelling around the world, I want to share some of the business ideas that will help not only in pursuing business dreams but also turn them into a successful career option.

Probe Yourself

There are many women who have vague and sketchy ideas flowing in their mind and are struggling to decide upon the right business idea. It happens most of the times that their thoughts are either discarded or not fully explored. In order to turn the passion into purpose, and to zero down on one business idea and get it formulated, we need to first probe into ourselves. We need to ask ourselves, “Do I believe what I think?” It is essential we find our Passion and differentiate it from the purpose of our life. Our Passion is Ours, and it is not for our family or kids or anyone else. Our Passions are connected to our kids, partner and family but our passions can be larger than our family . Our passions and our purpose are completely driven by what we need to learn and gain for ourselves. Passions are for self-indulgence and enjoyment. Passions and our purpose are often covered up by being busy with paying for the mortgage and bending to childrens demands or inuendos.

Be aware…. When you start to make a stand for what you want and need your children, family and friends may not like it.  Often the people around us need us to be predicable for them to feel safe and comfortable.  The tall poppy syndrome is active and blooming and will stop you if you are not clear and precise with your greater (selfish) passions and purpose.

 With my 40 years of experience of being a successful woman entrepreneur, I would like to share how you can move from Frustration to freedom of doing what you actually want to do and turn it into a lucrative business career.

There are a few questions we should ask ourself before actually starting a new business and become self-employed:-

• What do you like to do?
• What do you want to get out of the business?
• What are you good at doing?
• What would you like to learn to grow yourself and your family?

Enhance Your Life

By answering the below  questions, it will become easier for you to understand and identify what type of business you want to do. It is important that we choose what we are passionate about. Apart from this if we look at ourselves, the world is evolving digitally at a very fast pace and it is essential that we enhance our life in this digital age. As I have already mentioned in my previous blogs, there are four steps to enhance your life in this digitally transforming world, and they are:-

1. Discover what it is that you love to do
2. Identify your passions and your purpose in life
3. Identify your values and needs to action your passions and purpose
4. Formulate your agreements with yourself

Being a successful women entrepreneur and having mentored people and specially women over the years, I have realized the paramount importance of enhancing our lives in this digitally transforming age.   

I have come across many women who have this fear of starting any new projects or taking decisions about their life. All of us mostly have this fear of “CHANGE” in our life. There are countless ways that can bring about a change in our life at any point in time. If we take a wider look at our world, we have many changes around us, in the world of the internet, changing trends in the way humans think, the pathways for us to connect with ourselves and others etc. I remember how I started with my first business 40 years ago, when my Mother-in-law Chris, gifted me a book on – How to make corn dollies. Rob and I were married for a year and I was clueless that the gift from my mother-in-law could bring about such a productive change in my life.

I remember another day in my life, which was an eye-opener for me, when I met one of my half brothers and his family after more than 30 years. That day I decided that I will become the role model for not only my children but for a larger  family by turning  my ideas into a reality that I would be proud of and would leave a legacy.

 While on my success journey and over 40 years of being a She’preneur, I have also mentored women and men to achieve their goals by mentoring them through my online and offline programs. After travelling around the world and meeting so many successful people, I have figured out some of the business ideas that will help women turn their passions and purpose into successful business opportunities.

I believe everyone has a story to tell and a gift to share .

So, below I share some ideas that will help you get your business up and running in the year 2018.

1. Professional Organizing

With busy work schedules and social lives, down-sizing and organizing can be a tough task for people to take on. We all understand that minimalism is all the rage these days, and it is definitely more than simply cleaning up. To get organized, it requires to developing a system that people can stick to and that works for them. For people who are attached to their things, downsizing can be a challenge. Women are excellent organizers and can surely help in guiding other people to get rid of the unnecessary items. For this profession, one also needs to have patience and be able to understand the requirements of  people. So, having all these qualities in you, it can definitely turn your organizational skills into a lucrative business this year. People are hungry to be organized yet are busy being busy.

2. Technical Implementation Consultancy

If have IT expert skills then you have a great opportunity to work with small and medium companies who are looking for technical IT experts to integrate new technology with their business operations. Most of the well established entrepreneurs already have a lot on their plate and don’t want to struggle to learn and implement the latest technological advancements that would benefit their business return on investment (ROI).  So, a tech consultant can be a great resource for them to help them have a profitable business.  Identify what technical skills you have, Package them into a document, gather clients good work comments to market yourself as a niched area in technology for small to medium sized business.

3. Freelance Copywriter

Today everything is digital, from advertisement to selling and even socialising with your near and dear ones. Companies are looking out for inspirational writers and copywriters who can provide them with attractive, innovative and clean content for their advertisements, social media marketing, websites and blogs. People will pay for editing services. Women who believe they are good at playing with words can choose this as a good career option.  If you are not sure of your skills offer to write for 5 to 7 people or offer to edit 4 or 5 e books then gather short testimonials from those new “freebie” clients.  

4. Home Healthcare Services

While many businesses are targeting the Millennials,I believe it is a great niche not being catered for and that is people over 45.  There are many ways to help baby boomers who stay at home and cannot move out of their houses to avail various routine services, and turn it out into a successful business career. For example providing salon services to people at home, or assist them in the transition from one place to another with their packing, transporting and setting up etc. There are numerous other ways to help the people who cannot walk or drive on their own to fulfil their basic needs.

5. Social Media Consulting

Social Media marketing is another latest trend that is an essential tool for everyone today. Facebook and Twitter are the top networks that are targeted by business entrepreneurs and followed by the masses. But there are many businesses which do not realise the strength of platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr and Snapchat which have huge audiences. So, if you have a deep understanding of these social media platforms and are keen to stay abreast of the changes and learn more about them, then by gaining some essential knowledge, testing your knowledge about social media marketing, you can make a good business out of it.  Again offer your skills and knowledge for free to 4 or 5 people gather some experience while you have a full time job for your transition into your own business to be possible. 

6. Healthy Fast Food

People are becoming more health-conscious than ever and are looking for healthier food options that are easily and quickly available. By having competitive pricing and offering local, seasonal dishes in either a restaurant or a food truck, you can have a fruitful business. According to Business Insider, there were already a number of healthy fast food businesses taking over in 2017 and hence it is a fresh and benefitting idea for a business in 2018 for women entrepreneurs.

7. Crowdfunding Consulting

Though the concept of Crowdfunding is still in its infancy in many countries, entrepreneurs need help to find the best way to tap into new investors. The Crowdfunding Consultant can help in letting a group of people pool their contribution required to invest in any start-up. It is a whole new thing and is surely going to gain popularity over the coming years as there are more and more people who are eager to turn their business ideas into reality and looking out to raise funds for their business start-ups.

8. Affiliate Marketing Business

It is one of the top trends in the market today and has been for the past 20 years where by simply having your own website women entrepreneurs can display and sell various products from different online vendors like Amazon. By selling products of different vendors, one gets a commission on every sale through the visitors. You need to have a lot of visitors to your website, good content and traffic to earn well. You need to be passionate about the product and not be in this area for a quick buck. Affiliate and the likes have a bad name due to pushing  products on to family and friends.  Love what you do rather than do something for money.

9. Personal Care Services

Many modalities come under Personal Care Services.  You can train in areas from hair and make-up to massage to reiki, to acupuncture to chiropractic to many alternative health improvement modalities, including personal development processes if you have the passion and the desire to learn in these areas. Again people are hungry to gain more from life.  People are eating better, exercising more. We as humans have evolved in our thinking and we want more awareness of our emotions and thinking not to mention spirituality guidance and skills.

10. Accounting and Book Keeping

All business companies, big and small, essentially need to have correct accounting services to have a proper record of their transactions and allocations. It includes tasks like bank reconciliation, service tax records, sales tax information etc. Generally, women are naturally skilled at keeping records of things and overall management. If you have the suitable skill sets and are interested in such tasks, you can easily run and operate your own firm to handle this accounting and book keeping jobs.

11. Craft Ideas

Many women love making handicrafts and they can do it brilliantly, but what they lack is the art to sell it to the potential customers. It is a great business idea to attract elite customers as people love hand created items especially sweaters and caps, patchwork quilts, garden ornaments for inside and out. You just need to have a good mentor who can guide you how you can use your talent and hobby of yours into an excellent money making business. Once you start off you can grow into a niche of eager buyers.

12. E-book Writing

For women who have a niche in writing and want to make some extra money and fame, then E-book writing and Amazon Kindle are an amazing platform for it. Only if you have the taste of writing books and have creative writing skills then it can turn out to be the best business idea for women. 13. Event Planning

Women are good planners with whatever they do and they can use this natural behaviour of theirs as a lucrative career option.  The corporate sectors hugely need event managers and planners who can plan and take charge of events. This is a very practical and effective business idea that is gaining popularity at a tremendous pace.  I have been in the event planning arena for many years.  My tip is to find your niche and decide if you want to plan or manage or build.  These are three distinct areas when it comes to events for the corporate world.

14. Fashion or Interior Designing

It is the characteristic of most of the women to beautify everything be it clothes or interiors of their houses and offices. You need to have adequate knowledge and a good length of experience about the subject. It is one of the businesses that requires low investment but having good results and strong testimonials with photography proof you will attract customers.   

15. Photography

It is a talent and art to capture good photos in this digital world. Only if you are passionate about photography, you can turn your hobby into a successful business. I love photography and love to share my photos on my blogs and through social media. The latest smart phones can be a good start to your photography journey or you can use a high end SLR camera with latest specifications.  Like any passion it takes time to develop.

16. Online Tutoring

Teaching is a sacred job and it is a great platform where you can help to build a strong foundation for the future generations.  It is not just a job, but also a service to the society. Tutoring is also a very profitable business today and online tutoring can be carried to catr to the globe now.. For example, Udemy is the website where people sell online courses. If you have good communication skills and relevant academic knowledge with some teaching experience, then it is surely a great way to live your passion and be paid for it.

17. Translation Services Agency

This is a specialized business idea with a good return on investments for 2018. You can translate yourself and you can start by making a team of people knowing different languages and use their translation skills and provide services to others. 

18. Consulting

Being able to consult, coach, mediate or mentor takes experience in a particular field.  Experience for more than 20 years in my opinion, to be a good stable anchor point to solve problems for your clients and customers takes mane experiences over a length of time to gather your own distinctions.  If you are thinking of coaching or consulting and you have little experience have an experienced coach, mentor beside you to discuss areas that you do not have experience with.

My question to you is what do you know A LOT about this maybe your area of expertise and a good basis for a part time business that could grow into a full time profitable enterprise.

Another question for you:  What are you passionate about that you want to learn about.  I don’t recommend setting yourself up as a consultant, coach, mentor, teacher of something if you do not have more than 10 years experience behind you.  You will look, sound and feel like a newbie to your friends and your “wanna be” clients. 

My tip to use any of the above ideas is gather good experience in a field that you love.

It is your experience and the problems that you solve from your experience that people will willingly exchange their cash for your mind.
